I'm alive!!

I didn't mean to completely fall off the face of the planet for the past couple weeks, but here we are. It's been busy.

The garden continues. We're starting to hit the longer dry spells that require me to keep things watered myself more often. The angelica in particular seems to struggle with this weather, but I'm hoping that a good bit of mulch and more frequent watering helps it pull through. About half of my elecampane is starting to put out stronger leaves and really get established, and I'm trying to figure out what the difference is for the ones that are doing better and the ones that are still just barely hanging on. They're all planted together, but it seems half of the section their in might get more sun? I'm not sure, but I'm very curious.

The salad burnet and valerian and chard are all thriving as far as I can tell. The arnica is limping along, similar to the elecampane in that a couple of them seem to be doing pretty well, and the others are looking weaker. The raspberry bush is finally fruiting, but I haven't had a chance to harvest any yet. It's not in the most convenient location.

There's enough feverfew this year that I harvested a couple of batches over the past couple weeks, so that's now dried and jarred up for later. I'm making a bunch of infused oils I'll blend together for a muscle ache salve later on, and I have enough dried calendula by now that I've started tincturing what I harvest instead, just to have it in a different form. I already started a calendula oil, so I'll have plenty of options to work with on that front.

I am once again running into the challenge of making lots of things because it's fun, but not having enough uses for everything I make. My cabinet is already full of jars of tincture I have yet to use, including a number of things I'm not even sure what one would use for. Cleavers are good for the lymphatic system I believe, and purslane is generally nutritious, but in what instances would someone use a tincture of them? Who's to say. I'm sure someday I will find the answer, but until then, those jars will probably just continue to take up space unless I come across someone who wants them for something. Oh well!

When I was finishing my walk today, I passed by the big public ashtray outside my apartment building. There was a lot of smoke coming out of it. Not a small amount, but like, a lot. And it smelled really bad.

I went up to my apartment, thought about it for a moment, and then decided to put it out. It really was a lot of smoke and it smelled horrible. And like, the ashtray wasn't close to the building, but it was sitting on a bed of wood chips... next to a tree... just seemed like a fire hazard.

So I filled a bucket with water. And there were some people down by the entranceway, and they said that they'd passed that thing an hour ago and it had been very smoky then too. Surprising that it went so long like that without someone putting it out.

When I went out to take care of it, I was having a bit of trouble figuring out how to get the water in there. Some guy yelled down from a balcony with instructions of how to take it apart. So, that helped, and I was able to take it apart and pour water into the smoking, foul-smelling bucket of cigarettes.

And then he yelled down at me, "You're a good person!"

And like, I guess? Maybe? But honestly, mostly it's just... It was a fire hazard, and also, I live here. I'm not on the ground floor, but this is my apartment complex. I don't want the place that I live to be smoky and gross and maybe even catch fire.

And now my jogging clothes smell like cigarette smoke. Ew.

Aw, the nearby grocery store is closing down.

It's not a big deal, but it kind of is... We moved to this neighborhood 23 years ago, which is a long time but also not. There are people who have used this place for 40 years, and now it's going away... There's other nearby grocery stores (I work at one), but it just isn't the same when this one was right outside the neighborhood.

Pimping Eleceed for SmallFandomFest

I originally created this pimp post for SmallFandomFest but apparently never actually posted it here. :)

What do you get when you mix cats, magic, and action? Eleceed is one such of (admittedly) many examples! But with this one, come not only to be entertained but amazed!

With elements of both Triad-like lifestyles and martial arts as well, with healthy doses of humor, romance, and found family, and men and women equally beautiful and powerful, this series that started my love for WebToons is a feast not just for the reader but for the eyes as well! I'd rank this series' artist, Zhena, right alongside the best of Marvel, or DC, comics. Come see for yourselves!

Jeho Son's Eleceed has it all, for those of us fangirls (and boys) who love both cats and comics...

(WARNING: Beneath the cut is EXTREMELY load/graphic sensitivity!)

multifandom questionnaire pt 3

This is part 3 of [personal profile] maevedarcy's 72 Multifandom questions to ask a fangirl.

Experiences and Memories

1. What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had related to your fandom(s)?
I feel like everything in Smallville fandom has kinda blurred together. Maybe not a specific fandom, but in recent years, the excitement of running (well, co running) my first exchange was such a good feeling, as was the unexpected enthusiasm over Comment Bingo, when I finally got it up and running.

#2-12
2. Have you ever traveled to a location specifically because it was featured or related to your fandom(s)?
No. When I went to Vancouver though, I was excited when I realized I could recognize the top of the building that they used as Oliver's penthouse/Queen Tower in Smallville. I still remember a LJ friend made a list of places that they film at, and I left it on my laptop and forgot that I wasn't planning on taking it, so I couldn't use it. IDK how much my family would be all for my Smallville related tour of Vancouver but I could've tried to see a couple of spots. Oh well.

3. Can you share about a time when fandom helped you through a difficult period?
I don't know if there's a specific time, but fandom has always felt like an escape. I'm pretty closed off/keep things to myself, for better or for worse, and sometimes, I think I have been able to express myself online in a way that is a little harder to do in person. And people have always been kind and supportive and I have appreciated that a lot. I've left fandom multiple times but it's always easy to find a home here when I return.

4. What’s the longest you’ve ever waited in line for an event or release related to fandom?
Probably a couple of hours. Both when I stood in line at Barnes N Nobles for the 7th Harry Potter book (had to go twice - one to get the ticket with the Letter Group I was in earlier in the day and the second time when they were actually opening the doors) or when I went to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight and had to be there at like, 9PM. Even then, we were further back than I planned so we could've gotten there sooner but the seats we ended up with weren't so bad, iirc.

5. Have you had the chance to meet any of the actors, musicians, authors, or creators from your fandom(s)?
No, the closest I got was when I saw Shah Rukh Khan filming on my college campus and seeing Chris Evans in LA pre-Captain America. I was getting ice cream with a few friends and a premiere for Push had just let out. Dakota Fanning left fairly quickly, but I do remember he was hanging around. We recognized him but I didn't have a smart phone or anything for him to sign, so I didn't bother.

6. What’s the most treasured piece of merchandise you have that’s related to fandom?
Bollywood may not be a fandom I was ever in much, but I was obsessed with Shah Rukh Khan as a teen and I was in London a few days after his Madame Tussaud's statue was revealed, so when we went, they had a SRK doll. I bought it and brought it back with me. I still have it. Also my sister once got me a Superman keychain from Six Flags and I still keep it on my lanyard. It's held up well! :D

7. Do you remember the first item you ever collected or received related to fandom?
Not really. I had a lot of Shah Rukh Khan posters as a teen. I would assume it was something Superman related though since I've been a fan for so long.

8. What’s the most exciting fan event or panel you’ve attended?
I've never attended any fan events/panels.

9. Have you participated in any challenges, collaborations, or competitions within fandom?
Yes, I've been apart of land comms, bingo events (though I'm terrible about completing them!), fests, and exchanges. They're a lot of fun and have helped me get out of my comfort zone.

10. How did you feel the first time you saw your favorite character, band, or actor in person?
I remember OneRepublic was part of this summer fest years ago and I was really excited to watch them live. I don't know how much I actually enjoy live music events/concerts, but that was a blast.

11. Have any of your family or friends become fans because of your influence? What was that like?
My sister has actually ended up getting me into shows for the most part, because I barely watch anything and she gives a lot of things a shot (she was even watching Smallville before me). My dad watched Elementary because of me, since I wanted to, and he really liked it too, so we'd watch together.

12. What’s the most emotional moment you’ve had as a fan within your community?
I remember when one of my LJ friends passed away. We weren't close, but we did work together on a fandom newsletter and I was just shocked. I'm sure many other people can relate unfortunately, but the way it all happened and escalated so quickly was a lot. I think that was the first time someone I knew online had passed away. Just so sad.

Movies: None.

Television/Streaming: Watched an episode of Farscape (#6, "Thank God It's Friday, Again," where they go to that planet where people are essentially brainwashed into constant working). And Taskmaster, of course. I really like Fatiha, she is hilarious. The whole group gels really well, though and I'll be sad when this series is over. Other than that, some YouTube (Smosh stuff and Mark Narrations).

Books: Finished Summer Fun. It was a bit wild to finish this book, which is a thinly veiled alternate history of Beach Boys and Brian Wilson in particular, a day or so before Brian Wilson died. I thought the book was really good. The author is interesting; I read a couple of interviews with her from various indie magazines and she has been working on this book for a LONG time. And obviously, is a huge Beach Boys fan.

This book has a lot to chew on about fandom (especially say, fanfiction about real life folks; while B- is fictional, he is a real person in the universe of the book, and Gala is quite the obsessive fan). One review on Goodreads pissed me off because they said that the book was pretty dark when talking about trans lives.

Hi, have you been paying attention lately? Some people are so fucking oblivious.

Just finished Zoo Station: the Story of Christiane F. which was written by two German journalists in the 1970s about a teenager who was struggling with heroin. If you are around my age, you probably read Go Ask Alice at some point; this is the German version of that book, and unlike the version penned by a Mormon housewife as a cautionary tale, this one is real (as far as I know). Christiane's descent into drug abuse is gradual, and there are many societal factors in play here in the 1970s - the political upheaval in Germany, lack of jobs, the boredom of youths with nowhere to go, and cheap and plentiful heroin. Christiane has no idea what she's doing and has that invincibility of all youngsters who think they're better than the others - I'm not addicted, I can stop anytime I want to, etc. The book really paints a bleak picture of Berlin in the 70s. It did tend to get a little repetitive, although I know that the path for many addicts trying to get sober and off drugs is not a straight path (they relapse, sometimes multiple times). However, I felt that the journalists who put this book together from her words could have tightened that a little bit.

Next up is Jane Austen's Persuasion. It's the 5th anniversary of our online book club and we are doing a classic.

Rolling Stone Album List: only one this week. Number 494, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes (number 422 in the 2012 list). Rolling Stone blurb:
More a Spanish Harlem street gang than a girl group, the Ronettes were pop goddesses dressed as Catholic schoolgirls gone to hell and back. Phil Spector builds his Wall of Sound as his teen protégée (and future wife) Ronnie Spector belts “Be My Baby” and “Walking in the Rain,” while songs like “I Wonder” and “Baby, I Love You” ache with hope for a perfect love that always seems to be impossibly ideal and just within arm’s reach.

It's a good 1960s girl-group pop album. I liked most of it. "Walking in the Rain," "I WOnder," and "How Does It Feel" were a few stand-outs to me.

And indulgent Dabi/Hawks vampire AU for the [community profile] fangfrenzyficexchange :D

Addiction in the making | Dabi/Hawks | 1.4k words | rated T
